Hello,
The opinion widely held by Africans is that
there are a few roles and jobs that women should not hold. We examine whether
this is so.
‘Do not take any job that does not give you time
for your family, you know a woman is responsible for how the family turns out.’
A woman by this statement is expected to willingly and unwillingly sacrifice
her dreams in exchange for a family.
Make no mistake about this; taking care of
children is a full time job with overtime demands, when a grown man’s needs and
the house needs are added, we are able to understand how some women may feel so
overwhelmed that they are not motivated to get or keep outside employment.
However, I do not agree that all these
responsibilities are solely for the woman. Responsibility should be shared
between the parties involved. Each person should be given the opportunity to
dream and pursue their dreams within reasonable limits so no one feels trapped.
Notwithstanding, people should be allowed to voluntarily make their decision on
what is important to them and what they are willing to give to achieve it.
Why may a woman refuse a job?
- Cost of being on the job outweighs the benefits Tangible and Intangible)
- Requirements of the job is illegal
- She is not qualified for and is not able to handle such responsibility
- It will distract from personal goal rather than assist with achievement of goals
- There is no future in such job, no career path, no growth
- Insufficient time to take on such jobs
If your reason for not taking a job is because you are a woman, then ‘…we have a problem!’
